How it was made
- Frances McDormand and producer Peter Spears optioned the film rights to the book in 2017; McDormand then approached Chloé Zhao after seeing her film The Rider at that year's Toronto International Film Festival.
- Filming took place over four months in late 2018, with Zhao splitting her time between the Nomadland shoot and pre-production on the Marvel film Eternals.
- McDormand, Zhao and other crew members lived out of vans during production, working alongside real-life nomads such as Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells, who appear in the film.
