Little Women (2019)
Little Women is a 2019 American period drama film written and directed by Greta Gerwig. It is the seventh film adaptation of the 1868 novel by Louisa May Alcott. How it was made
- Costume designer Jacqueline Durran built roughly 75 principal period costumes, each taking about 40 hours to make, and assigned each March sister a core colour: red for Jo, green and lavender for Meg, brown and pink for Beth, and light blue for Amy.
- Durran had the sisters share and reuse the same wardrobe pieces across the film to visually reinforce their relationships, and modelled one of Jo's looks on a figure in Winslow Homer's 1870 painting High Tide.
- Production designer Jess Gonchor built the March family house from scratch on a plot in Concord, Massachusetts, aiming for an exterior that read as 'an old worn-out jewelry box' and an interior laid out like 'a beautiful maze and flow'.
- Cinematographer Yorick Le Saux shot on 35mm film; Gerwig began editing with Nick Houy the day after the December 2018 wrap and screened a cut for Sony three days before giving birth to her son, having kept the pregnancy private through the shoot.
