How it was made

The film's protest reunion scene recreated a real 1972 demonstration at the trial of a woman prosecuted for having an abortion after a rape, filmed with non-actors playing the demonstrators.
Human-rights lawyer Gisèle Halimi, who had been the real case's defence attorney, appears in the scene breaking through a police line to bring demonstrators into the courthouse.
Agnès Varda wrote the lyrics for the film's musical set pieces herself, and cast her own children, Rosalie Varda-Demy and Mathieu Demy, in supporting roles.
