Parasite (Korean: 기생충) is a 2019 South Korean black comedy thriller film directed by Bong Joon Ho, who co-wrote the screenplay with Han Jin-won. It stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam, Jang Hye-jin, Park Myung-hoon, and Lee Jung-eun. The film follows a poor family who infiltrate the home and life of a wealthy family.

How it was made

The Park family's house was built as a hybrid set: the ground floor and garden were constructed on an outdoor backlot while the upper floor was shot against green screen, with everything visible beyond the garden added later as VFX.
Production designer Lee Ha-jun designed the house as if it had been built by a fictional in-story architect, prioritising camera blocking over livability, for instance giving the living room a single wide window and only spartan seating so it would suit the character's habit of admiring the garden from that spot.
The outdoor set's location and window placement were chosen by tracking the real position of the sun at the planned shooting times, so cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo could get the sophisticated indirect lighting and tungsten warmth he wanted.
Editor Yang Jin-mo cut the film without traditional coverage, at times stitching together different takes of the same shot to create more options in the edit, working in Final Cut Pro 7, a program that had not been updated since 2011.
Subtitle translator Darcy Paquet coined the term ram-don for the noodle dish jjapaguri, and swapped Seoul National University for Oxford and the messaging app KakaoTalk for WhatsApp in the English subtitles so the jokes would register immediately for English-speaking audiences.
