How it was made

Costumes for Marlene Dietrich were designed by Christian Dior.
Dietrich was given unusual creative control over her own scenes; Hitchcock said she personally directed the crew on where to place lights and how to photograph her, joking that she was “also a professional cameraman, art director, editor, costume designer, hairdresser, makeup woman, composer, producer and director.”
Hitchcock later called the film's opening “lying flashback,” which shows false events as though true, one of his greatest mistakes, realising the risk of misinterpretation only after seeing it cut together, too late to reshoot.
The film contains several extra-long takes similar to those Hitchcock had used in Rope and Under Capricorn.
