How it was made

Almost 12 writers worked on the script over eight years, one of the longest pre-production periods of any Hitchcock film.
Warner Bros. executives insisted on removing the source play's illegitimate child and the priest's execution from the ending, fearing a negative audience reaction.
Quebec's diocese withdrew its free permission to film in local churches after objecting to the script's original ending; when writer George Tabori refused to change it, Hitchcock brought in William Archibald to rewrite the script instead.
Hitchcock had cast Anita Björk after seeing her in Miss Julie, but Warner Bros. forced a recast when she arrived in Hollywood with her lover and their child.
Working from his usual detailed storyboards, Hitchcock grew frustrated with Montgomery Clift's Method acting, unable to understand why Clift kept blowing takes rather than simply following his direction.
