How it was made
- Fincher first attempted to adapt the Matz comic in 2007 with Paramount before moving the project to Netflix in 2021, at which point Andrew Kevin Walker rewrote the script and Michael Fassbender was cast in the lead.
- Fincher cited Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samouraï as the film's most direct reference, with Fassbender basing his performance on Alain Delon's character from that film.
- Principal photography began in Paris in November 2021, then moved through the Dominican Republic, New Orleans and Chicago before finishing in St. Charles, Illinois, which stood in for Beacon, New York, over roughly four months.
- Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross composed the score, layered against a soundtrack built around songs by the Smiths.
