How it was made
- Interior scenes were shot at Korda Studios near Budapest, on one of the largest sound stages in the world, where around 20 sets were built for the production.
- Real potatoes were grown on an adjoining sound stage, planted at staggered intervals so the crew could film different stages of growth as needed.
- A team of six people built 15 spacesuits for the film.
- Mars exteriors were shot over eight days in Wadi Rum, Jordan; the custom rover model built for filming was later donated to Jordan's Royal Automobile Museum.
- The film was shot with 3D cameras over a roughly 70-day production.
- Composer Harry Gregson-Williams used commander Lewis's collection of 1970s disco songs as the only music available to Watney on Mars, so it recurs through the film as diegetic music.
