How it was made
- Ridley Scott, then a year and a half removed from Blade Runner, was hired by agency producer Richard O'Neill to direct the spot; Scott said he accepted brutal budget constraints, putting the total cost below $250,000, against contemporary press estimates that ran as high as $900,000.
- Actors in the commercial were paid $25 a day, and Scott cast local skinheads to play the pale, shaven-headed "drone" workers filling the auditorium.
- The commercial was shot in England; after Apple's board of directors hated it at a December 1983 screening, CEO John Sculley got cold feet and asked the agency to sell off the ad's two booked Super Bowl slots.
- Steve Wozniak was prepared to personally cover half the cost of the remaining Super Bowl airtime if Steve Jobs paid the other half, though this proved unnecessary once the agency could not resell the second thirty-second slot.
