How it was made

Kurosawa formed his own production company, Kurosawa Productions, in 1959 after Toho grew frustrated with him running over budget on The Hidden Fortress.
The script took 80 days to write, with Kurosawa and his co-writers deliberately avoiding close resemblance to real corruption cases in Japan.
Actress Kyōko Kagawa wore uneven shoes and a knee brace to convincingly play a physically disabled character, and was later injured in the face during a car-scene shoot, prompting Toshiro Mifune to block the press from her hospital room.
