How it was made
- The 16-minute single-take shot in “The Tunnel” segment stopped only because lights rigged to the soldiers' backs would have become visible once the platoon turned; Kurosawa believed the take must have been close to a record, since a single film magazine holds only ten minutes.
- Art director Yoshiro Muraki built a full replica of Kurosawa's childhood home for “Sunshine Through the Rain,” down to a gate nameplate reading “Kurosawa.”
- Makeup rather than masks was used for the fox faces in that segment after early mask tests failed, and Kurosawa personally choreographed the foxes' movements.
- For “Crows,” the crew replanted a barley field with wheat a full year ahead of filming to match Van Gogh's Wheatfield with Crows, then released around 100 caged crows on cue, using sounds the birds disliked to make them fly into frame.
- Industrial Light & Magic, run by George Lucas, provided the film's special effects at cost, including the rainbow added digitally to the fox-wedding segment.
