How it was made

The crew filmed on location around Tokyo using a handheld camera hidden inside a box and a carrying cloth, since lead actors Isao Numazaki and Chieko Nakakita were unknown enough to blend into real crowds.
A bystander at Shinjuku Station once mistook Kurosawa for a pickpocket and tried to intervene, unaware a film was being shot around him.
Because Numazaki had no musical training, Kurosawa and composer Tadashi Hattori spent days teaching him to convincingly conduct a symphony for the film's climax.
Limited lighting equipment and lower-quality camera lenses forced many scenes into a sharp focus that could only render one actor clearly at a time.
