How it was made

George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola persuaded 20th Century-Fox to cover a budget shortfall after original financier Toho Studios ran out of money, in exchange for international distribution rights; Coppola and Kurosawa appeared together in Suntory whisky commercials to help raise further funds.
Lead actor Shintaro Katsu left the production before the first day of shooting had finished, reportedly after angering Kurosawa by bringing his own camera crew to film Kurosawa's methods; he was replaced by Tatsuya Nakadai, who ended up playing both the double and the lord he impersonates.
For the final battle sequence, Kurosawa filmed 5,000 extras for a full day of shooting, then cut the footage down to 90 seconds in the finished film.
