How it was made

It was the last film composer Fumio Hayasaka worked on before his death from tuberculosis in 1955; his pupil Masaru Sato completed the score.
Kurosawa said working with Hayasaka changed how he thought about film music, leading him to treat scoring as counterpoint to the image rather than simple accompaniment.
The plot was sparked by a conversation between Kurosawa and Hayasaka about nuclear weapons following the 1954 hydrogen bomb test accident.
