How it was made
- Villeneuve spent five years developing the screenplay while directing two other films, replacing nearly all of Wajdi Mouawad's play's dialogue and briefly considering making the film silent before abandoning the idea as too expensive.
- Villeneuve searched extensively across Canada to cast Nawal, a role spanning four decades, and at one point considered using two or three different actresses before casting Lubna Azabal and ageing her with makeup to play the character from 18 onward.
- The film shot for 40 days total, 15 of them in Jordan, with a Lebanese and Iraqi crew hired for the Jordan scenes; art director André-Line Beauparlant built up rock and debris on a street in Amman to recreate war-torn Beirut.
- Villeneuve wrote Radiohead's "You and Whose Army?" into the script from the very beginning, intending its use to signal that the film presents a westerner's point of view on the story's world.
