How it was made
- Villeneuve secured a two-picture deal with Warner Bros. to split the novel across two films, in the same structure used for the two-part 2017/2019 adaptation of Stephen King's It.
- Cinematographer Roger Deakins was originally attached to the project but dropped out and was replaced by Greig Fraser in December 2018.
- Game of Thrones constructed-language creator David J. Peterson was brought on in April 2019 to develop languages for the film.
- Eric Roth wrote a 50-page treatment before Villeneuve completed a first draft by May 2018; Jon Spaihts joined as a further co-writer that September.
- Villeneuve deliberately avoided referencing David Lynch's 1984 adaptation or Alejandro Jodorowsky's unmade version while writing, working directly from Herbert's novel instead.
