How it was made
- Animation supervisor Katsuya Kondō and Miyazaki committed the film to traditional hand-drawn animation throughout production, and Studio Ghibli's in-house computer-graphics section was closed for the duration to prioritise it.
- Miyazaki insisted that every ship in the film be drawn frame by frame, rejecting the usual technique of sliding a single fixed-perspective cel across the frame.
- Miyazaki hit a creative block in pre-production until a visit to Tate Britain, where John Everett Millais's 1852 painting Ophelia convinced him the studio's animation style needed to change.
- The character Sōsuke is based on Miyazaki's own son Gorō when he was five years old.
