How it was made

The film began as a short in-flight feature commissioned by Japan Airlines and grew into a full theatrical release as Miyazaki's storyboards expanded its planned runtime from thirty minutes to forty-five and then to a full hour.
Because Japan Airlines remained a major investor, the film's opening titles appear simultaneously in ten languages, including Japanese, Italian, Korean, English and Arabic.
The outbreak of war in the former Yugoslavia during production, in the same Adriatic region where the story is set, pushed Miyazaki toward a more serious tone than he had originally planned.
Miyazaki resolved a prolonged storyboarding impasse by adding the character Gina, Porco's curse backstory, and a daydream sequence inspired by Roald Dahl's short story They Shall Not Grow Old.
