How it was made
- The Castle of Cagliostro was Miyazaki's feature directorial debut; production ran just seven and a half months from start to premiere, with only five months of that as actual production time.
- Miyazaki began by drawing a bird's-eye view of the setting before developing the story, then had to keep revising the storyboards mid-production after realising the planned four-part structure would exceed the running time; animation work began in July while the storyboards were still only a quarter finished.
- The staff wrote personal touches into the film: Lupin's car, a Fiat 500, belonged to head animator Yasuo Ōtsuka, and Clarisse's car in the chase scene, a Citroën 2CV, was Miyazaki's own first car.
- The production budget of ¥500 million made it the most expensive anime film up to that point, a record later matched by Miyazaki's own Laputa: Castle in the Sky.
