How it was made
- Miyazaki had a standing agreement with publisher Tokuma never to adapt his own manga into a film, and only agreed to direct once the magazine's editors pushed hard for the adaptation.
- With only sixteen chapters of the manga written at the time, Miyazaki had to restructure the story and refocus it around the Tolmekian invasion to build a complete screenplay.
- The film was made in nine months on a budget of roughly $1 million, with animators paid by the frame.
- Animator Hideaki Anno, who later created Neon Genesis Evangelion, was assigned the film's challenging Giant Warrior attack sequence.
- Miyazaki drew on the real-world mercury poisoning of Minamata Bay, and how nature recovered there, as the model for the film's poisoned world.
