How it was made

Only one major set was built for the production, an ornate ballroom for the Beaufort residence; most other interiors were shot in real period buildings, including the 1896 mansion known as 'The Castle' at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, used for Mrs. Mingott's home.
The snow-bound country house scenes were filmed inside the real circa-1737 Dutch-colonial Luykas Van Alen House in Kinderhook, New York.
Screenwriter and longtime collaborator Jay Cocks gave Scorsese Edith Wharton's novel in 1980, more than a decade before the film was made, arguing it suited his sensibility even though Scorsese didn't immediately recognise his usual themes in it.
