How it was made

The casting director auditioned 300 boys for the role of Tommy before choosing Alfred Lutter, who held his own when Scorsese and Ellen Burstyn deviated from the script to improvise, unlike other child actors who tended to freeze or revert to the page.
The film's opening was shot in a single day on a set that cost $85,000 to build.
The first assembled cut of the film ran three hours and sixteen minutes before being trimmed for release.
