How it was made

Tim Burton was originally attached to direct, on the strength of his short film Vincent, and stepped aside once Scorsese expressed interest.
The screenplay began as a Columbia University film-course assignment written by 26-year-old student Joseph Minion, originally titled Lies after a Joe Frank monologue that had inspired it.
Steven Spielberg suggested an ending in which a statue breaks apart on a truck while Paul shouts about invaders from the expressway; Terry Gilliam talked Scorsese out of using it.
No one had a working ending until Michael Powell suggested Paul simply end up back at work as the new day began, an idea the production tried, alongside several filmed alternatives, before settling on it.
