How it was made

Steven Spielberg originally developed the remake himself but decided it was too violent for him to direct, trading the project to Scorsese in exchange for Schindler's List, which Scorsese had chosen not to make.
Nick Nolte lost weight for his role while Robert De Niro gained muscle, a deliberate contrast that let the noticeably shorter De Niro still register as physically threatening opposite the taller Nolte on screen.
De Niro had his teeth ground down, sharpened and deformed for the role of Max Cady, later paying $20,000 to have the dental work reversed once filming wrapped.
Robert Mitchum, Gregory Peck, in his final theatrical film role, and Martin Balsam all appear in the remake, each having starred in the original 1962 Cape Fear.
The climactic boat sequence was filmed in a 90-foot water tank built inside a soundstage constructed specifically for the production, with special effects miniatures for the climax created by Derek Meddings.
