How it was made

Paul Thomas Anderson financed the $20,000 short with gambling winnings, his girlfriend's credit card, and $10,000 his father had set aside for his college education.
A borrowed Panavision camera, arranged through a friend's industry connections, would normally have cost $6,000 for a weekend rental; the loan ended up stretching to six weeks.
The shoot was disorganised, with no experienced producer or cinematographer and a crew that had never worked together before, forcing a mid-shoot replacement of the cinematographer.
Producer Wendy Weidman rented a cheap diner in the Gorman Pass as the film's shooting location.
