How it was made
- Scenes set in the South were shot with an anamorphic lens to produce a deliberately squeezed image conveying Troy's alienation in an unfamiliar place; audiences found the effect confusing enough that theatres put up signs explaining it was intentional.
- Zelda Harris was cast as Troy through an open audition process.
- Co-writer Joie Lee, who originated the story from her own childhood memories, also played Aunt Maxine and had significant creative input on casting and directing the other actors.
- Spike Lee selected all of the film's music himself, drawing from songs he remembered from his own childhood.
- Crooklyn was the first film produced under Lee's multi-year first-look deal with Universal Studios.
