How it was made
- Lee based the film's title on XFL player Rod Smart's self-given nickname "He Hate Me"; the lead character adapts the phrase into "She Hate Me" for his ex-fiancée.
- Before filming, Lee hired lesbian author and sex columnist Tristan Taormino as a consultant, who put him through what she called "lesbian boot camp" of reading assignments, visits to lesbian bars and panel discussions.
- The film was shot on Super 16 over 28 days in New York City, and includes a close-up scene of an actual human birth, echoing a similar sequence Lee had filmed for Mo' Better Blues in 1990.
