How it was made

Screenwriters Charlie Wachtel and David Rabinowitz discovered Ron Stallworth's book Black Klansman in 2015, interviewed Stallworth themselves and wrote a spec script before the project reached Spike Lee.
Filming began in October 2017 around Ossining and Garnerville, New York, with Garnerville's exteriors standing in for one of the film's Colorado Springs police stations.
For Harry Belafonte's cameo, his final film role, Lee had the crew dress in suits and dresses to honour him on the day of filming his scene recounting the lynching of Jesse Washington.
