How it was made

Scorsese alternated work on the documentary with directing Shutter Island throughout 2008 and 2009.
Scorsese, editor David Tedeschi and a team of researchers spent five years assembling interviews, music, film clips, photographs and memorabilia for the film.
Harrison's widow Olivia had declined earlier offers to produce a film about her husband because he had wanted to tell his own story through his personal video archive, and only agreed to the project after meeting Scorsese.
