How it was made

Vitamin D powder stood in for cocaine throughout filming; Jonah Hill was hospitalised with bronchitis after inhaling large quantities of it during production.
Editor Thelma Schoonmaker pushed to shoot on film; after extensive comparison tests in pre-production, most of the film was shot on film stock while green-screen work and low-light night scenes were captured on the digital Arri Alexa system instead.
The finished film contains 400 to 450 visual effects shots and draws on more than 60 songs, though only 16 made the official soundtrack release.
