How it was made

Production began in 1995 when Bob Dylan's manager Jeff Rosen started scheduling interviews with Dylan's friends and associates, including poet Allen Ginsberg and folk musician Dave Van Ronk, both of whom died before the film was finished.
Dylan himself sat for ten hours of interview footage with Rosen in 2000, which became a spine of the finished film.
Scorsese, who came aboard as director in 2001, drew on archival material including a 1965 screen test Dylan made for Andy Warhol and colour footage of the 1966 Manchester Free Trade Hall concert, shot by D. A. Pennebaker and recovered in 2004 from water-damaged film held in Dylan's vault.
