How it was made
- The crew painted the brick walls of the old Medfield State Hospital to look like plywood, serving both as set dressing and to block the set from view of a nearby road.
- Cawley's office scenes were shot on the chapel's second floor in the late evening, with lights shone through the windows to simulate daytime.
- Old industrial buildings in Taunton's Whittenton Mills Complex were used to replicate the Dachau concentration camp for the film's wartime flashback scenes.
- Rather than commission an original score, Scorsese's longtime collaborator Robbie Robertson assembled the soundtrack entirely from pre-existing modern classical recordings, including works by Krzysztof Penderecki, György Ligeti and John Cage.
