How it was made
- The de-aging scenes were shot digitally using a custom three-camera rig the crew called the three-headed monster, alongside two infrared witness cameras used to capture data for the effect.
- Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto lit the de-aging scenes exactly as he would have without any CGI, using colour charts, reference spheres and still photographs on set so the digital team could recreate the original lighting precisely.
- A Phantomflex camera shot certain sequences at 300 to 700 frames per second to give them a slow-motion, contemplative quality.
- Prieto built a distinct visual lookup table for each decade depicted: a Kodachrome look for the 1950s, an Ektachrome look for the 1960s, a silvery layer over the 1970s, and a desaturated bleach-bypass look from the 1980s onward.
- A posture coach was hired to teach De Niro, Pacino and Pesci how to move like much younger men for the earlier timeline scenes.
