How it was made

Twelve sculptors working six days a week crafted about 20,000 faces and 1,105 animatable puppets for the film, plus 2,000 more for background characters, with each detailed main-character puppet taking two to three months to build.
Very little CG was used in the film, mostly to duplicate background audience members or to composite green-screen actions that could not be filmed simultaneously with the rest of a shot.
The production built more than 200 detailed handmade settings to support the film's effects work.
Anderson was inspired to make a film about dogs after seeing an actual road sign for the Isle of Dogs district in London while Fantastic Mr. Fox was still in development.
Production ran at 3 Mills Studios in East London from October 2016, staffed in part by animators who had previously worked on Fantastic Mr. Fox.
