How it was made
- Anderson recorded the entire voice cast outdoors, in a forest, an attic, a stable and underground, rather than in a studio, and had them record before any animation was made, to keep the performances spontaneous.
- The miniature sets used real trees and real sand rather than fabricated materials, and the town of Great Missenden, where Roald Dahl lived, heavily influenced the film's overall look.
- Animation director Henry Selick left the production to make Coraline and was replaced by Mark Gustafson; while based in Paris, Anderson kept directing remotely by acting out scenes and sending the footage to Gustafson and the animation crew by iPhone.
- To achieve a consistently autumnal look, the filmmakers made sure no single frame in the finished film is without some trace of the colour orange.
- The puppets were built by Mackinnon & Saunders, and much of the animation crew had previously worked on Tim Burton's Corpse Bride.
