How it was made
- Around 250 sets were used during filming, and art director Carl Sprague had the crew avoid any framing that would identify the film as being shot in New York, even altering street signs.
- The dalmatian mice seen in the Tenenbaum house were created by the crew adding spots to plain mice with a Sharpie marker.
- The crew laid 10,000 square feet of AstroTurf at Forest Hills Stadium to shoot Richie's tennis match, while Central Park Zoo stood in for a rainforest and the Waldorf-Astoria was used for the hotel scenes.
- During the young Margot's birthday scene, Anjelica Huston's hair caught fire from a birthday candle; Kumar Pallana put it out before she was seriously hurt.
- The slap Huston delivers to Gene Hackman on their first day of shooting together was real, leaving a visible handprint on his cheek.
