How it was made

Most of the score draws on pre-existing film music from Indian cinema rather than an original composition, including 'Charu's Theme' from Satyajit Ray's 1964 film Charulata and cues by composer Shankar Jaikishan; Anderson has said it was Ray's films that first drew him to India.
The soundtrack also pulls three songs from The Kinks' 1970 album Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One, and closes the film with Joe Dassin's 1969 recording 'Les Champs-Élysées.'
