How it was made

Amblin employee Stefan Dechant expanded early storyboards into simple animatics using an Amiga 2000 and a Video Toaster, to test how scenes would read in three-dimensional space before filming.
Spielberg hired production designer Rick Carter roughly two years before filming began, reasoning that the island setting and its dinosaurs would need a long design lead time.
Cinematographer Dean Cundey aimed for a 'heightened reality' look, using dramatic, unfiltered lighting without diffusion, while balancing the effects crew's need to keep the dinosaurs mostly in shadow.
At Spielberg's suggestion, Michael Crichton rewrote his own first draft in 40-page increments after the original version skipped ahead to action rather than building up to it.
Beyond his design work, Rick Carter contributed story ideas to the script, including Hammond recruiting Grant and Sattler and the shaping of Hammond's character arc.
