How it was made

The prologue's escape through the false-bottomed magic box was suggested by Spielberg, but it was producer Frank Marshall who devised the box itself, drawing on his own experience performing magic tricks under the stage name Doctor Fantasy; production designer Elliott Scott insisted the trick be filmed in a single uninterrupted shot.
Indiana's chin scar, acquired when he lashes himself with his own bullwhip fighting off a lion, was written in as a nod to a real scar Harrison Ford got in a car accident as a young man.
The script went through at least six writers and nine years of drafts, including versions built around a Garden of Immortal Peaches, a Monkey King villain, and a mechanical-armed Nazi sergeant, before Spielberg redirected the story around Indiana's father to give the film a stronger spine.
