How it was made
- Willie Scott was named after Spielberg's Cocker Spaniel and Short Round was named after co-writer Willard Huyck's dog; more than 100 actresses auditioned for Willie, including an unknown Sharon Stone.
- The dinner scene's revolting menu was built by the props department from ordinary materials: giant bugs made of rubber and filled with custard, and monkey brains made from raspberry-flavoured custard.
- Casting director Mike Fenton held open calls for East Asian boys across cities including New York, Hong Kong and London to find Short Round; Ke Huy Quan was cast after producers noticed him coaching his younger brother, who had come to audition instead of him.
- Amrish Puri was cast as Mola Ram after Lucas and Spielberg searched England and the United States without finding a suitable actor there; Puri was already working on 18 films simultaneously in India when he was cast.
- A scripted scene of a snake coiling around Willie Scott was dropped during filming after Spielberg saw how difficult it was for Kate Capshaw, who has a genuine fear of snakes, to perform it.
