Directed by Steven Spielberg.
Directed by Steven Spielberg · Shot by Janusz Kamiński · Cut by Michael Kahn · Music by John Williams · Ratio 1.85:1 · 195 min
How it was made
- Ralph Fiennes put on 28 pounds (13 kg) to play Amon Göth and studied historic newsreels and interviews with Holocaust survivors who had known him.
- The Płaszów camp had to be reconstructed in a nearby abandoned quarry because modern high-rise apartments were visible from the site of the original camp.
- Interior shots of Schindler's enamelware factory were filmed at a similar facility in Olkusz, while the factory's actual exterior and stairs were used for those scenes.
- After the World Jewish Congress objected to filming inside the actual Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp, the crew built a replica of a portion of the camp just outside its entrance.
- The finished film contains 126 speaking parts; Spielberg cast Israeli and Polish actors chosen specifically for their Eastern European appearance.
- Spielberg asked screenwriter Steven Zaillian to extend his 115-page draft to 195 pages and lengthened the ghetto liquidation sequence himself, wanting it to be 'almost unwatchable.'
