How it was made
- Kubrick had effects artists try to build a physical animatronic head for David with a movable rubber face, but producer Jan Harlan said the tests were a total failure that looked awful, and the approach was abandoned.
- After Spielberg took over the project, he initially still hired Stan Winston to build an animatronic David, only scrapping it once he and the crew saw Haley Joel Osment's performance in The Sixth Sense and decided to cast him as a live actor instead.
- Spielberg copied Kubrick's secretive production methods, withholding the complete script from cast and crew, banning press from set and requiring signed confidentiality agreements; Teddy's voice actor Jack Angel recorded his lines entirely out of context, told only to sound like Eeyore, but wise, old and stoic.
- Visual effects such as erasing the puppeteering rods used to move Teddy and removing Haley Joel Osment's visible breath in cold scenes were completed in-house by PDI/DreamWorks.
- John Williams built his score as a deliberate homage to Kubrick, working in echoes of György Ligeti's choral music from 2001: A Space Odyssey and, at Kubrick's specific request, a quotation from Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier.
