How it was made
- The film was shot on 50 ASA stock, the slowest film stock made, which Tarantino chose for its near-grainless, lustrous look, comparing it to 1950s Technicolor.
- The Jack Rabbit Slim's set cost $150,000, the single largest expense in the film's $8 million budget, and was built in a Culver City warehouse alongside the production's other sets and offices.
- The diner sequence was shot on location at the Hawthorne Grill, chosen for its Googie architecture.
- Cinematographer Andrzej Sekuła, editor Sally Menke, production designer David Wasco and costume designer Betsy Heimann had all worked with Tarantino on Reservoir Dogs.
- During Samuel L. Jackson's callback audition, an assistant mistakenly called him 'Mr. Fishburne' and he arrived still holding a hamburger he had bought while hungry; his annoyed reading with the hamburger in hand was kept and became part of the scene.
- No score was composed for the film; Tarantino built the soundtrack from surf, rock and roll, soul and pop records, opening the picture with Dick Dale's version of 'Misirlou.'
