How it was made
- Costume designer Sharen Davis and Tarantino repeatedly watched the television series Bonanza for reference on Django's wardrobe, and hired the hatmaker who had made the hat worn by the show's Little Joe.
- Davis based Django's valet outfit on Thomas Gainsborough's oil painting The Blue Boy from around 1770, and modelled King Schultz's faux chinchilla coat on Telly Savalas's look in Kojak.
- During the phrenology scene, Leonardo DiCaprio genuinely cut his hand on broken glass and stayed in character while bleeding; Tarantino kept the take in the final cut after the rest of the cast gave a standing ovation.
- The film was the first Tarantino picture not edited by Sally Menke, who had died in 2010; editing instead went to Fred Raskin, a former assistant editor on Kill Bill.
- Kerry Washington insisted the whip strikes on her back be real rather than faked, and asked to spend time confined in the prop hot box before filming so the sense of confinement would feel authentic.
