How it was made

Martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping, known for his work on The Matrix, served as the film's fight advisor.
The House of Blue Leaves battle took eight weeks to film, six weeks over the original schedule, and relied on practical 1970s-style effects such as fire extinguishers and condoms to create blood spray rather than computer-generated imagery.
Tarantino shot the confrontation with the Crazy 88s in black and white specifically to avoid an NC-17 rating.
The anime sequence covering O-Ren Ishii's backstory was directed by Kazuto Nakazawa and produced by Production I.G, the studio behind Ghost in the Shell.
Miramax suggested splitting the single planned film into two after editing began, which let Tarantino keep scenes such as the full anime sequence that pacing would otherwise have forced him to cut.
