How it was made
- After the script leaked online in January 2014, Tarantino staged a live reading of it at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles with Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Bruce Dern, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen and others before committing to actually shoot the film.
- The guitar smashed by Kurt Russell's character was not a prop but a genuine 1870s Martin guitar on loan from the Martin Guitar Museum; the planned swap to a replica never happened, the destruction was unplanned, and the museum stopped lending instruments to film productions afterward.
- Cinematographer Robert Richardson shot the film on 65mm using three camera models, the Arriflex 765 and Panavision's Studio 65 and 65 HS, and it was projected in Ultra Panavision 70 at a 2.76:1 aspect ratio, the widest theatrical format used since the 1960s.
- For the 70mm roadshow release the production avoided a digital intermediate entirely to preserve the format's native resolution, having the film colour-timed photochemically at FotoKem instead.
- Ennio Morricone composed the score without having seen the finished film, and the soundtrack also recycles three unused cues Morricone had written for John Carpenter's The Thing in 1982.
