How it was made

Tony Kushner's initial draft ran to 500 pages and covered four months of Lincoln's life; he later narrowed the focus to the two months surrounding the push to pass the Thirteenth Amendment.
Liam Neeson, originally cast as Lincoln, left the role after a table read gave him what he called a thunderbolt moment realising the part was no longer right for him at 58; he was the one who suggested Daniel Day-Lewis as his replacement.
Sally Field, ten years older than Day-Lewis, had to lobby for a screen test opposite him to win back the role of Mary Todd Lincoln, arguing that period lighting and makeup would make the age gap read correctly on screen.
The Virginia State Capitol served as both the interior and exterior of the US Capitol and the exterior of the White House; its House of Delegates chamber was remodelled to double as the House of Representatives set.
